Atomos Shinobi II 5″ On-Camera Monitor

Category: Field Monitor (non-recorder)
Price: From USD 349 R6 500 approx

Why I love it: Clean, compact, and beautifully bright—the Shinobi II packs serious professional tools into a featherlight field monitor.

My Experience

I’ve worked with plenty of on-camera monitors over the years, but the Shinobi II genuinely surprised me. It’s one of those tools that slips so naturally into your setup you almost forget how powerful it really is—until you start relying on its focus tools, waveforms, and that insanely bright 1500-nit screen. Whether I’m outdoors in harsh sun or in studio light, the display holds up every time. The fact that I can load custom LUTs, monitor HDR, and even control my camera through USB-C—all in a fanless, silent unit—is a game-changer. It’s become a mainstay in my travel kit and on tighter shoots where speed, clarity, and weight matter.

In-Depth Review

  • Pro-Grade Monitoring in Your Pocket
The 5.2″ touchscreen is ultra-bright (1500 nits), HDR-capable, and packed with the full suite of AtomOS 11 tools—waveforms, RGB parade, false color, EL zones, peaking, and more. Every frame looks crisp, even under direct sunlight, and the touchscreen is fluid and intuitive.
  • Camera Control with Real Feedback
With supported mirrorless and DSLR models (Sony, Canon, Nikon), the Shinobi II offers touchscreen camera control—adjusting ISO, shutter, aperture, white balance, and even focus tracking on some bodies. It’s fast, responsive, and eliminates the need to fiddle with menus mid-take.
  • Professional Power Options
The Shinobi II gives you everything—NP-F batteries, USB-C power delivery, D-Tap via dummy battery, or DC barrel. It’s riggable with solid cable management and a clamp system that keeps everything clean and tight.
  • AtomOS 11 Elevates It
The new operating system makes monitoring faster and more accurate with custom layouts, enhanced assist tools, and better usability compared to earlier versions. Everything feels ready for pro sets—without the recorder bulk.
  • Passive Cooling = Silent Operation
No fan means no buzz during quiet takes. The unit stays cool to the touch even after hours of use, and that matters more than most people realize—especially in run-and-gun setups or studio interviews.

What Would Have Taken It Over the Top

  • A faster boot-up time would help when speed is everything
  • Physical function buttons would be welcome for quick access without tapping through menus
  • A secondary mounting thread would give more rigging flexibility
  • Wider compatibility for camera control, especially for focus tracking, would make it unstoppable

Still, it’s easily a 9 out of 10 for me—and one of the best monitoring tools under R7k.

Ideal For

Creators who shoot mirrorless or DSLR—whether you’re vlogging, shooting interviews, filming brand content, or directing small crews. This is the monitor you grab when every gram counts but quality and accuracy can’t be compromised.

If you’re ready to level up your field confidence, the Shinobi II is the real deal.
